Why Change Is Good

This week we dive into a very intriguing topic, "Why Change Is Good."

We all have experienced some type of change throughout our entire lives. For some of us it may have been a bad or good experience but regardless it had an impact on your life whether it was minor or major.

I was having a conversation the other day with a friend of mine that I hadn't spoken to in months. We were catching up and both of us had complimented each other on how much we had changed since the last time we seen each other. He had told me that becoming a father had changed his life and that his child meant the world to him. As he was telling me this I could just feel his emotion through his expressions. I began to realize how much his character had developed.

During graduate school, a topic we had discussed in a course was adapting to change in an organizational culture. The workplace has to be one of the most difficult settings to adapt to change. Most of us have either gone through a change of management or had to learn how to apply a new application to your position. In most cases, everyone reacts very negatively about the change because they either feel complacent with their current workflow or threatened about their job. One of my favorite complaints pertaining to change at the workplace is technology. Everyone gets the impression that you need to be a nerd to learn how to use a computer which just astonishes me. Nowadays people are getting let go of their jobs because they refuse to learn how to use a computer or enhance their skills. Einstein once said that if you do not embrace technology you will get left behind. You need to understand that without change how are ever going to learn and develop to be a good individual to society.

People need to realize that in today's economic times you need to be able to perform in order to produce. If it means getting the proper training to keep your job then you do it. For whatever reason you may not like the task just by showing initiative to perform the task shows great character. This signifies that you are willing to commit to learning new things and reflects who you are as a person. Character is a very important trait that we all must develop and continue to work on throughout our lifetime. Leaders are always looking to see how well you can perform and adapt to certain situations. When they see or hear about this, they develop a new level of appreciation for you.

Well you are probably saying all of this makes sense but what about the ones who refuse to change? Right, so I read a book by Chip & Dan Heath titled "Switch: How to Change Things When Things Are Hard," which they discuss how to develop strategies for people to accept change. One key thing I took from this book is we need to feed into people's minds with patience before they can grasp it. We are all creatures of habit and are wired very differently among ourselves. So understand that when we get frustrated with people who don't comprehend very well take a deep breath, grab them by the hand (not literally) and guide them through the point you are trying to make across. Like the saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day."

The main point I want to get across to you today is that we need to accept change in every aspect of our lives in order to develop great character. Regardless of the circumstances, life gets rough and has obstacles of its own but all that really matters is how you adapt to change. No matter how bad you think your life may suck or hate your current job, look for the positive aspects of a change that you are currently dealing with. Remember that depending on how well you adapt to change will determine the development of your character and most importantly who you are as a person.

Until next week. Have a great weekend y'all. God bless. Cheers!
