The New Economy
Happy Friday everyone! It's been a month since my last blog topic, let's just say March was a hectic month for me. Anyways, today's topic is about the new economy and how you must adapt to it whether you want to or not.
In 2008, we witnessed one of the most economic downturns the U.S. has faced in it's history. After six years now, we are still recovering from the recession and in case you have not realized our economy has transformed into a "new" economy. For those of you who are jobless or waiting on the fences for something to come across your path, I don't want to be the one to break it to you but it's like the Italians say "fah-gett-about-it." The unemployment rate is still roughly about 7%, there are a lot of people who are underemployed, working multiple part-time jobs and others who went to college who are not doing anything that has to do with what they studied.
Jobs are being diminished everyday and there are plenty of reasons for this. Technology has impacted just about every industry today, job positions are requiring more duties and time, and some positions are even being merged into one position. The internet has changed the world by being able to hire people from outside the U.S. to perform job duties for a much lesser wage. I heard the other day that our country has the highest minimum wage in the world yet it is still not enough for our citizens to maintain their standard of living. Being an American is expensive and most of us are spoiled Americans, but hey that's what our country is about to have the freedom and lifestyle you choose to have.
Did you know that just about every successful business or person experiences their most success during bad economic times? Successful people know how to utilize their resources available and are able to thrive regardless of the circumstances. So with that being said, how can you take advantage of your available resources and be able to create something and go off and run with it. Well we do live in a digital age and just about anything you can think of is accessible on the internet through our computers, mobile devices and tablets. You see you need to understand that we need to be able to work smarter and not harder. Our inner creativity is what determines the outcomes of your job or work ethic.
I remember growing up and hearing my teachers say that the ones who were great at math and science were going to be the ones who shape our future. Well, as of today I have to admit that they were right all along. I read an article a few months back and it stated that the majority demand for future jobs was going to be focused on those who come from a background in science, technology, engineering, or math (S.T.E.M.) For example, I have a cousin graduating next month from the University of Texas with both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering. It gets better, he already has a job lined up after he graduates with a substantial starting salary plus a sign on bonus.
Regardless of the matter of your circumstance, we live in a new economy and the previous economic times are way past us. You need to be able to look forward and accept the fact that the jobs of our past times are depleted. For those who are currently employed or have a great career going for them, appreciate what you have. The job market today is pretty much a competition within itself, applicants have to compete among each other for the one job opening and you only get one shot to prove that you are the right fit for the position. For those of you who are unemployed or underemployed, I strongly recommend you start getting creative about what great skills and experience you have that might benefit others. Or if you need to work a few multiple part time jobs just to get by then by all means do it. As long as you find a way to provide for yourself and your family then just do it. If it makes you feel better, most people who graduate from law school about 50% are jobless after they graduate, so don't feel too bad about your situation.
I want to encourage you to really focus on the things that make you happy and are passionate about. Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself what is that you really want to get out of life, where do you see your potential to prosper and most importantly what are you willing to do to get there.
In the end all that matters is getting out of bed, looking forward to going to work and that you are happy. I always tell myself no matter how bad my life may seem there is always going to be someone else out there whose life is worse than mine. So be grateful for the little things you have in life and appreciate every bit of it, there are a lot of people who are less fortunate than you are. So be great and enjoy your weekend. Cheers!
